It’s official, I am now ordained as the Reverend J J Wulf, legally empowered to perform marriages and other official ceremonies in the United States of America.
I was ordained as a minister in the Universal Life Church, joining 20 million other ordained ministers who even include the famous Homer Simpson, who is also ordained via the Internet in an upcoming cliff hanger episode of the Simpsons in order to perform a same-sex marriage. The two tenets of the Unity Life Church are: “To promote freedom of religion”, and “To do that which is right”. Of course exactly what is right is a very interesting question, and one that I will leave for later.
I just wanted to mention now, in reference to my newly acquired ability to officiate same-sex marriages, that I find it a little ironic that with the divorce rate so high, and various temporary and de-facto relationships (including the good-old serial polygamy) gaining prominence and increased social acceptance, gay people are fighting for the right to form a socially recognised committed partnership. At the same time, same-sex marriages are seen by some people as being a threat to traditional family life. Don’t expect to see me performing same-sex marriage ceremonies at the local Hare Krishna temple, but I do think that a culture of committed, responsible relationships is far more favourable to spiritual advancement than promiscuity, of any type.
